A weekend kayaking trip off Long Island ended in heartbreak after the bodies of 27-year-old Shane Garcia and 25-year-old Aaron Montemarano were recovered from Shinnecock Bay between Sunday, Nov. 2, and Monday, Nov. 3, authorities confirmed.
Garcia was reported missing around 8:45 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 1, by his girlfriend after failing to return home from the outing. Police discovered his work van parked near the end of Shinnecock Avenue in Hampton Bays, sparking immediate concern for his safety. Earlier that day, Garcia had shared a photo with his girlfriend showing himself and Montemarano kayaking near the Ponquogue Bridge—an image now marking their final moments, according to Southampton Town Police.

The search for the two men involved multiple agencies, including the New York State Police Underwater Recovery Team, which deployed SONAR technology and dive operations. Despite extensive efforts, the search ended tragically with the recovery of both men’s bodies.
