A quiet apartment complex on the city’s south side was shattered by gunfire late Monday night when 26-year-old Amanda Sheree Jones was fatally shot inside her own home while her 2-year-old child was just feet away.
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers rushed to the 700 block of Turtle Creek North Drive shortly before midnight after residents reported hearing multiple shots fired. Upon forcing entry into the apartment, officers found Jones suffering from several gunshot wounds. Despite efforts by medics, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Miraculously, the young child inside the home was unharmed and was immediately taken into protective care by authorities.
“This is every parent’s worst nightmare,” said IMPD Capt. Rob Rider at the scene. “A mother taken in the blink of an eye, and now a toddler grows up without her. Our homicide detectives will not rest until the person responsible is held accountable.”
Two individuals were detained at the scene and are being questioned as persons of interest. While no arrests have been made public, investigators emphasized there is no active threat to the surrounding neighborhood.
Detectives spent the overnight hours combing the Turtle Creek complex for witnesses, collecting shell casings, and pulling surveillance video from nearby units and businesses.The Marion County Coroner’s Office officially identified the victim Tuesday morning as Amanda Sheree Jones.
Community members have already begun leaving flowers and stuffed animals at the entrance to the apartment building, many expressing shock that such violence struck a complex known for young families.
