A tragic scene unfolded in northeast San Antonio on Monday afternoon when a Leander Independent School District bus transporting members of the Vandergrift High School marching band was struck by a train, sparking a massive emergency response from multiple agencies.
According to early information from law enforcement, the crash occurred at a railroad crossing where the bus, returning from a weekend band competition, was hit by an oncoming train. Responders from Schertz Police, San Antonio Fire Department, and the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office rushed to the site to assist victims and secure the area.

While authorities have not yet confirmed the total number of injuries, several students and staff members were assessed by paramedics, with some taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. Officials have withheld the identities and conditions of those involved pending family notifications.
Leander ISD released a statement expressing its deep concern for those affected, assuring families that the district is cooperating closely with investigators and providing emotional and logistical support to the school community.
“Our thoughts are with our Vandergrift High School students, staff, and families during this difficult time,” the district said. “We are fully supporting first responders and ensuring our students receive the care and help they need.”

The collision came just a day after another train-related crash in the same region — involving an 18-wheeler near FM 3009 and Lookout Road — which, while serious, resulted in no major injuries.
Schertz Police emphasized the critical importance of caution at railroad crossings in light of the two back-to-back incidents.
“Trains can take more than a mile to come to a complete stop. We urge drivers to stay patient, stay alert, and never attempt to beat a train,” a department spokesperson said.
