Trefor Lloyd Hughes MBE, a prominent figure in Welsh football, has passed away at the age of 77. His death was confirmed on November 14, 2025, by the Football Association of Wales (FAW), where he held various leadership roles over the years.
Born in 1947 on the Isle of Anglesey, Hughes dedicated much of his life to the development of football at both grassroots and national levels. He began his involvement in the sport at a young age, playing for local teams on Ynys Môn before becoming an influential volunteer in the Anglesey League. His passion for the sport extended beyond playing, as he took on roles such as the secretary of the Welsh Alliance and the North Wales Coast Football Association.

Hughes’s contribution to Welsh football continued as he joined the FAW Council in 1989. He worked his way up through the organization, serving as Treasurer, Senior Vice-President, and eventually becoming the FAW President in August 2012. His leadership was marked by a strong belief in the power of football to unite communities and bring people together.
Beyond his football career, Hughes was actively involved in his local community. He served as a councillor for the Isle of Anglesey County Council and as the Mayor of Holyhead, demonstrating his commitment to public service.
In recognition of his exceptional contributions to Welsh football, particularly on Anglesey, Hughes was awarded the MBE. He was also inducted into the Gorsedd of the Bards in 2007 for his cultural contributions to Wales.
Hughes’s death has left a significant void in Welsh football. The FAW expressed its condolences, stating that his leadership and dedication to the sport will be remembered for generations to come. His legacy extends beyond his administrative roles, as he shaped pathways for players, coaches, and administrators across Wales.
