CLEVELAND — The policing community is mourning the loss of retired Cleveland Police officer Derrick Dent, who passed away on October 12.
Derrick began his career with Durham Constabulary in the mid-1960s before transferring to Cleveland Police when the force was established. Over the years, he built a reputation as a dedicated and respected officer, serving much of his career in Hartlepool, where he worked extensively as a dog handler.

Colleagues remember Derrick as a skilled professional with a deep commitment to the service, admired for his calm approach and strong bond with his police dogs. In the later years of his career, he was stationed at The Bridewell, Teesside Magistrates’ Court, before retiring in 1994 after decades of exemplary service.
A funeral service for Derrick Dent will be held on Friday, November 7, at 2:30 p.m., at Durham Crematorium, South Road, Durham (DH1 3TQ). Friends, family, and former colleagues are warmly invited to attend and pay their respects.
Those who served alongside him have expressed their condolences and fond memories, describing Derrick as a loyal colleague and a true gentleman who left a lasting mark on everyone who had the privilege of working with him.
