Topeka, KS — Authorities are investigating a tragic shooting that left two people dead Wednesday morning in a residential neighborhood south of Topeka. The Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 6700 block of SW Briarmeade Lane in the Montara subdivision around 10 a.m. for a welfare check on a female. Upon arrival, deputies discovered two individuals deceased from gunshot wounds.

Officials indicated the preliminary investigation points to a domestic-related incident. All parties involved have been identified, and authorities confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the community.
The Kansas Highway Patrol and Shawnee Heights Fire Department assisted with the response. Nearby schools, including Pauline Central Elementary, Pauline South Elementary, and Washburn Rural Middle School, were placed on lockdown as a precaution. District officials noted the “Secure Campus” status was unrelated to any incidents inside the schools, and normal activities continued indoors.
Law enforcement said the incident was initially reported after a family member called 911, alleging that a man had shot someone at the residence. Authorities noted prior calls had been made to the address involving the reporting individual.
Drones, a plane, and multiple law enforcement units were deployed to secure the scene and aid the investigation. Officials continue to gather information regarding the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
