The University of Louisiana at Lafayette community is grieving the loss of Dr. Margarita Perez, associate vice president for Student Affairs and dean of students, who passed away Tuesday evening at the age of 50 following a long illness. Her passing leaves a deep void for students, colleagues, and friends who admired her dedication, compassion, and leadership.
Dr. Perez devoted over 25 years to higher education, with the last decade spent serving the UL Lafayette community. Renowned for her focus on student well-being, she guided thousands of students through their academic journeys, offering mentorship, advocacy, and unwavering support.

“Through her smile, openness, and ability to make everyone feel seen and included, she was a gift we all shared,” said Dr. Jaimie Hebert, Interim President of UL Lafayette. “Margarita brought warmth to every conversation, steadiness to every challenge, and joy to every success.”
Earlier this month, Dr. Perez was honored with the Dan Seymour Award, the highest recognition from the Louisiana Association of College & University Student Personnel Administrators, for her lifetime of service to students. She also received the University of Louisiana System Outstanding Staff Award for her exceptional contributions to education and student life.
Even while facing her own health struggles, Dr. Perez remained committed to her work, demonstrating courage and grace that inspired colleagues and students alike. A proud New Orleans native, she earned her bachelor’s degree from Loyola University, a master’s from the University of New Orleans, and completed her doctorate in educational leadership at UL Lafayette.
Dr. Perez is survived by her wife, Stephanie Galendez, assistant dean in the Graduate School, along with family, friends, and countless students whose lives she touched. Funeral arrangements and details for a campus remembrance ceremony will be shared in the coming days.
Colleagues and students remember Dr. Perez as a mentor, advocate, and friend whose dedication and kindness made UL Lafayette a welcoming home for all. Her legacy of compassion, leadership, and service will continue to inspire generations of students and staff.
