The University of Arizona community is reeling after a heartbreaking hit-and-run crash late Thursday night near 2nd Street and Euclid Avenue claimed the lives of two students, Sophia Troetel and Josiah Santos, and left another student, Katya Castillo-Mendoza, critically injured.
According to the Tucson Police Department (TPD), the collision occurred around 11 p.m., when a speeding vehicle struck the three students before fleeing the scene. Authorities later confirmed that the 19-year-old suspected driver believed to be responsible has been taken into custody as the investigation continues.

In a statement released Friday, the University of Arizona expressed its deep sorrow, saying:
“The University of Arizona community is deeply saddened by the collision that tragically claimed the lives of two of our students, Sophia Troetel and Josiah Santos, and seriously injured another, Katya Castillo-Mendoza. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and all grieving those who lost their lives, and our support to the injured student and their loved ones.”
Friends, classmates, and professors have described Sophia and Josiah as “bright, compassionate, and full of promise,” remembering them as individuals who made a lasting impression on everyone they met. Katya Castillo-Mendoza remains hospitalized as doctors continue to monitor her condition.
