The University of Iowa community is deeply saddened by the passing of Aiden Orion Washburn, a courageous 9-year-old from Keokuk, Iowa, who became an inspiring figure for many while battling a rare congenital heart condition. Aiden passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 9, 2025, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, leaving behind a legacy of strength, optimism, and resilience.
Born with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome, a congenital defect that impedes normal blood flow through the heart, Aiden underwent multiple open-heart surgeries and ongoing treatment throughout his young life. Despite the medical challenges, his infectious humor, bravery, and love for life earned him admiration across Iowa. He became a symbol of resilience for many families facing similar battles.

In 2024, Aiden was selected as a Hawkeye Kid Captain, a special honor from the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital. This program recognizes young patients who have overcome serious health challenges. Aiden’s selection culminated in a celebration during a Hawkeye football game, where fans cheered him on, both at the stadium and across the street at the children’s hospital. His story captured the hearts of many and showcased the unwavering spirit of a child fighting a life-threatening illness.
Known for his adventurous spirit, Aiden had a passion for collecting sneakers, learning about sharks and marine life, and creating humorous videos for his YouTube channel, “Aiden’s Funny Videos.” His love for life shone brightly, and he cherished time spent with his younger brother. Earlier this year, Aiden’s Make-A-Wish trip to Disney World was described by his family as a dream come true, providing cherished memories that he will carry with him forever.
In a moving tribute, Aiden’s family wrote: “Aiden’s laughter, love, and light will always be part of us. He will be forever smiling, forever loved, forever in our hearts.”
Condolences and heartfelt messages have poured in from faith communities, neighbors in Keokuk, and staff and families at the Stead Family Children’s Hospital, who have remembered Aiden as “a brave soul with a heart full of joy.”
