The University of Kansas (KU) and the Chi Omega sorority are mourning the loss of Elsa McGrain, a 21-year-old student who was killed in a hit-and-run accident on Thursday, November 6, 2025, while jogging in North Lawrence.
Elsa, a vibrant and beloved member of the KU community, was known for her kindness, dedication, and infectious energy. Her family, heartbroken by the untimely death of a young woman with so much potential, shared the tragic news, urging the public to assist in the investigation surrounding her death.

The accident occurred early on Thursday morning as Elsa was out on one of her regular jogs. According to authorities, she was struck by a dark-colored vehicle that fled the scene immediately after the collision. Despite the efforts of nearby residents and emergency responders, Elsa succumbed to her injuries shortly after the accident.
A cherished member of the Chi Omega sorority, Elsa’s passing has left a profound impact on her sisters and the entire KU community. Described by her friends as a supportive, compassionate individual with a contagious spirit, Elsa’s warmth and leadership will be remembered by those who knew her.
“She was a friend to all, always offering a listening ear and bringing light to every room she entered,” said one of her sorority sisters. “Her kindness and energy made everyone feel valued and important.”
Elsa, a communications major, was deeply committed to her studies and had aspirations of making a positive difference in the world. Her professors and peers admired her work ethic and her genuine desire to help others.
In response to her tragic passing, the Chi Omega sorority is planning a memorial to celebrate Elsa’s life, and the McGrain family is requesting any information about the hit-and-run incident to aid in the ongoing investigation. The Lawrence Police Department is actively pursuing leads, asking anyone with knowledge of the accident or the vehicle involved to come forward.
