The University of South Carolina is mourning the loss of Erik Elken, a junior accounting major and standout player on the Gamecocks men’s rugby team, who passed away Tuesday after a brave fight against a rare form of Stage 4 sarcoma. Standing at 6’5″ and 243 pounds, Erik was a formidable presence on the rugby field, but those who knew him best say it was his gentle spirit, unwavering faith, and compassion for others that truly defined him.
A candlelight vigil will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the Horseshoe, where the USC community will gather to reflect on Erik’s life and legacy. Students, faculty, teammates, and supporters are invited to come together in love and remembrance.

Erik, a Pennsylvania native and graduate of Conestoga High School, was affectionately known as “Big E.” He served as a two-year starter for the Gamecocks, playing as a lock. On the field, he was known for his strength and discipline, but off the field, his integrity, humility, and leadership shone brightly. As a leader on the team, Erik led the team’s Bible study, opened every match with a prayer, and was always the first to offer support to his teammates in times of need.
Head Coach John Roberts shared an emotional tribute, stating, “Erik was the best among us, and we don’t say that because he’s passed. He was a light on our team. Our prayers are with Leslie and the entire Elken family.”
In January, Erik made the difficult decision to step away from the university and rugby team after being diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of sarcoma. Despite the challenges of his illness, he faced his battle with remarkable courage, positivity, and faith. He underwent a major surgery and several rounds of chemotherapy, continuing to inspire those around him with his resilience and grace. Unfortunately, Erik’s condition declined rapidly, and he passed away the following day, surrounded by the love of his family.
The USC men’s rugby team, coaches, and university community rallied around Erik during his battle, with a head-shaving fundraiser raising over $10,000 to help with his medical expenses. Erik cherished the outpouring of love and support he received during this difficult time.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, November 28, at Great Valley Presbyterian Church in Malvern, Pennsylvania. Friends, teammates, classmates, and anyone touched by Erik’s life are invited to attend.
Erik Elken will be remembered not only for his athletic achievements but for the kindness, faith, and strength he demonstrated in every aspect of his life. His legacy will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of all who knew him.
