The Urbandale, Iowa community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of 15-year-old Miles Phipps, a student at Urbandale High School who tragically passed away by suicide. His death has left a profound impact on family, friends, classmates, and teachers, as they come to terms with the loss of a young life filled with promise.
Miles was known for his gentle nature, creativity, and bright spirit. A talented musician, he spent much of his time playing the guitar, filling his home with melodies that reflected both his vibrant and introspective personality. Friends and family fondly remember his quirky sense of humor, such as the fuzzy worms he would playfully place around the house, a small but meaningful reminder of his playful and caring heart.

His empathy and thoughtfulness extended beyond his music. Those who knew him describe him as someone who was always ready to offer comfort and support, brightening even the darkest days with his presence. His kindness, whether through a smile or a well-timed joke, made him a beloved figure in his community.
In honor of Miles’ memory, a candlelight vigil will be held on Sunday, November 9th, from 6-8 p.m. at Giovannetti Shelter, Walker Johnson Park (8900 Douglas Ave, Urbandale, IA). The vigil will be a time for family, friends, and community members to come together to remember Miles and share stories of the joy he brought to their lives.
Miles’ family has also shared plans to dedicate a park bench and possibly a tree in one of his favorite outdoor spots, as a living tribute to his love for nature and the peace he found there. Contributions toward this memorial can be made via Venmo: @Ashley-Campbell-515.
In a message shared by his loved ones, they wrote, “I am shattered beyond words. Yesterday our baby took his last breath on earth, and will be forever missed… All 15 years Miles was here, he was so amazing in every way and he was so loved by so many people and he made an impact on everyone. He never hurt a soul and he would always make someone smile with the guitar in his hands or the fuzzy worms he would place around the house.”
Miles’ passing serves as a painful reminder of the mental health challenges many young people face. His family hopes his memory will encourage others to be more open about mental health struggles and to offer compassion to those who may be silently suffering. Although his life was tragically short, Miles’ impact was deeply felt, and he will be remembered for the love and joy he shared with all who knew him.
