Wilson County, TN – The Vanderbilt medical community is in mourning following a tragic helicopter crash on Saturday afternoon, which claimed the life of Allan Williams, RN, a highly respected Flight Nurse and Paramedic with Vanderbilt LifeFlight. The crash occurred in a rural field in the 7100 block of Cairo Bend Road, Wilson County, Tennessee, and left two other crew members seriously injured.
The LifeFlight helicopter, which was not carrying a patient at the time, went down under unknown circumstances, triggering an immediate response from local authorities. Williams, known for his dedication to critical care transport, tragically did not survive the crash. His loss has left an immense void within the LifeFlight team, where he was regarded as an experienced and compassionate medical professional, always willing to go above and beyond in the most dangerous of circumstances.

Andrew “Andy” Sikes, a Critical Care Flight Paramedic, survived the crash but remains in critical condition. The aircraft’s pilot also sustained serious injuries, though at the request of the pilot’s family, their identity has not been made public.
In response to the tragedy, Vanderbilt LifeFlight released a statement honoring the crew members’ dedication and sacrifice. “For 41 years, through more than 80,000 flights and 40,000 ground transports, the remarkable members of the Vanderbilt LifeFlight team have saved countless lives,” said Dr. Jane Freedman, Deputy Chief Executive Officer and Chief Health System Officer. She emphasized the LifeFlight program’s unwavering commitment to safety and the inherent risks of medical flight work. “Despite the risk, these dedicated individuals feel called to serve patients in their most vulnerable moments,” Dr. Freedman continued.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are both investigating the cause of the crash. Authorities have confirmed that the helicopter went down in an unpopulated area, and no injuries were reported on the ground. However, no additional details about the incident have been released as of yet.
