GREENSBORO, N.C. — The legal community is mourning the loss of Janet Ward Black, the founder and owner of Ward Black Law, who passed away on Sunday, November 2, 2025, at the age of 66.
The Greensboro-based law firm announced her passing in a statement, describing her as a leader whose faith, compassion, and dedication shaped the firm’s mission and values. “Her leadership, faith, and love for people shaped who we are and how we serve,” the firm said. “We will honor her legacy by continuing the work she loved and by caring for our clients and community.”

Janet Ward Black was widely respected in the legal field. A graduate of Duke University School of Law, she became the first female assistant district attorney in Rowan and Cabarrus counties before founding one of North Carolina’s largest woman-owned plaintiff law firms. She also served as president of both the North Carolina Bar Association and the North Carolina Advocates for Justice.
Known for her generosity, Black led Ward Black Law to donate 10 percent of its gross revenue annually to nonprofit causes. Her efforts in promoting servant leadership and community outreach earned her widespread admiration across the state.
In May 2025, she was diagnosed with ALS, a battle she faced with courage and grace. The firm noted that she had prepared her team to continue her vision of compassionate service and strong advocacy.
A memorial service for Janet Ward Black will be held on Friday, November 14, 2025, at 1 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Greensboro. In lieu of flowers, donations are encouraged to International Cooperating Ministries (ICM), an organization she strongly supported.
Her passing marks the end of an era for Ward Black Law, but her legacy of integrity, service, and faith will continue to guide the firm and inspire those who knew her.
