The Watervliet community is in mourning following the tragic death of 17-year-old Chayse Ott, a Watervliet High School senior and beloved member of the school’s football team, who passed away after a car accident on Sunday, September 28, 2025.
The Accident

The Berrien County Sheriff’s Office reported that the crash happened shortly before 3 p.m. on Dwight Boyer Road near M-140 in Watervliet Township. Investigators believe that speed played a role in the collision.
When first responders arrived, Chayse was found unconscious and trapped inside the vehicle. Emergency crews worked to extricate him before rushing him to Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo in critical condition. His family kept vigil by his side in the Trauma ICU.
Sadly, despite hours of medical efforts, Chayse succumbed to his injuries the following morning.
Three others involved in the crash sustained only minor injuries and were treated at the scene. The Sheriff’s Accident Investigation Unit continues to review the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Remembering Chayse
Chayse was remembered not only as a dedicated student and athlete, but also as a caring son, brother, and friend whose kindness left a lasting impact on those around him.
In a statement, Watervliet Youth Football & Cheer expressed their heartbreak:
“The Watervliet Youth Football and Cheer program is deeply saddened by the passing of Chayse Ott. Our thoughts and prayers are with Chayse’s family and friends.”
The group also announced a special tribute, inviting the community to stand in solidarity:
“Please join us at the Varsity Game tomorrow, Friday, Oct. 3, at 7:00 PM for the home game vs. South Haven to show support for his friends and all who loved him.”
A Community in Grief
As Watervliet comes together to mourn, the overwhelming support from classmates, teammates, and neighbors reflects the depth of Chayse’s influence. His determination on the football field, along with his warmth and generosity off it, will be remembered as part of his enduring legacy.
