Wellsville Community Grieves After Fatal Crash Claims Two Teen Lives
A devastating early-morning crash has left the small town of Wellsville, New York, in shock after two teenage friends were killed and four others injured in a single-vehicle accident on Saturday, November 8, 2025. The crash occurred at approximately 2:24 a.m. on a sharp curve of Tarantine Boulevard, when a 2020 Buick Encore carrying six teenage occupants veered off the road and struck a utility pole on the driver’s side.

According to the New York State Police (NYSP), the vehicle was traveling eastbound when it exited the north shoulder and crashed, causing significant damage. First responders arrived to find the vehicle heavily damaged with the occupants trapped inside.

The two young men who lost their lives were identified as 17-year-old Derrick J. Smith and 18-year-old Gavin Odell, both of Canisteo, New York. Smith was sitting in the tailgate area of the SUV, while Odell was seated behind the driver. Tragically, both were pronounced dead at the scene.

The other four occupants of the vehicle, including the 17-year-old driver and three other passengers aged 14, 15, and 16, sustained non-life-threatening injuries. They were transported to Jones Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Investigators from NYSP’s Collision Reconstruction Unit and the Bureau of Criminal Investigation are continuing their work on the case. Authorities have confirmed there were no signs of impairment at the time of the crash, and autopsies for the two deceased teens are scheduled.

In a statement of grief, Wellsville EMS & Rescue expressed their condolences, saying, “Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones affected by this tragic incident. We are grateful for the teamwork and professionalism displayed by all responding agencies under extremely difficult circumstances.”

As the Wellsville community struggles with the tragic loss of two young lives, friends, family, and local residents are coming together in support of the victims and their families. The investigation into the crash continues, as many try to come to terms with a heartbreak that will echo through the town for years to come.
