Wichita police are investigating a tragic homicide after 43-year-old Rachel Johnson, who had been reported missing, was discovered dead inside a vehicle at a south Wichita home on Sunday, September 28, 2025.

Authorities said Johnson was last seen by her family around 9:30 a.m. on Friday, September 26, driving her black 2014 Ford Fusion. A missing person report was filed the following day under suspicious circumstances, prompting homicide detectives to take over the case.
On Sunday evening, investigators were led to a residence in the 1800 block of South Longford Circle, where they located Johnson’s vehicle. Inside, officers found her deceased. When police searched the home, they discovered a 39-year-old man in the basement dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Preliminary findings suggest the two had a prior domestic relationship.
Wichita Police Chief Joe Sullivan called the incident a “heartbreaking tragedy,” noting the devastating toll of domestic violence.
“A mother has lost her life to a senseless and cowardly act, leaving a family devastated and a community grieving,” Sullivan said. He urged anyone experiencing abuse to seek help, adding: “No one should have to live in fear in their own home. Help is available. You are not alone.”
