MISSION, Texas — Authorities in Hidalgo County are investigating a deadly shooting that claimed the life of a 42-year-old man early Monday morning in rural Mission.
According to Sheriff Eddie Guerra, deputies were dispatched to the 4200 block of J&A Drive at approximately 1:37 a.m. after receiving reports of gunfire. When officers arrived, they discovered the victim dead inside a residence from what appeared to be gunshot wounds.
Witnesses at the scene told investigators that a woman was seen fleeing the area carrying a rifle shortly after the shots were fired. Sheriff Guerra later confirmed that the woman had been detained and that the suspected weapon was recovered.
Authorities have not released the identities of either the victim or the woman in custody as the investigation remains ongoing. Detectives are working to determine the events that led to the fatal shooting and whether the individuals involved were known to each other.
Sheriff Guerra said additional details will be made public once investigators have gathered more evidence and conducted interviews with witnesses.
