A tragic stabbing incident in the Ballinlough area of Cork on Monday night has left a woman dead and her husband in critical condition. Gardaí have arrested a man in his 20s, believed to be the nephew of the couple, in connection with the attack.
The victims, named locally as Stella and Brian Gallagher, were long-time residents of Shrewsbury Downs. Both chemical engineers, the Gallaghers had lived in the estate for two decades and were parents to four grown children. The incident unfolded around 9:15 p.m. when neighbors reported a disturbance outside the couple’s home. Gardaí and emergency services, including members of the Armed Support Unit, arrived at the scene shortly afterward.

Stella Gallagher was rushed to Cork University Hospital (CUH) with severe injuries but was later pronounced dead. Her husband, Brian, was also taken to CUH, where he underwent emergency surgery and remains in serious but stable condition.
A man in his 20s, armed with a knife and known to the couple, was arrested at the scene. He is currently being detained at a Cork City Garda station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984, with authorities assessing his medical fitness for questioning. The knife believed to have been used in the attack has been recovered.
Residents of the quiet neighborhood, described as a tight-knit community, have expressed shock and disbelief. Neighbors described the Gallaghers as kind, quiet individuals who had never caused any trouble. “It’s such a tragedy,” one neighbor said. “I hope Mr. Gallagher pulls through.”
Following the attack, a local doctor rushed to assist Ms. Gallagher, who had collapsed in a nearby green area before paramedics arrived. The scene remains cordoned off as Gardaí continue their investigation, conducting a forensic examination of the property and gathering evidence. A post-mortem examination of Ms. Gallagher’s body is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.
Gardaí have launched a major investigation into the incident, with a Senior Investigating Officer appointed and an incident room established at Anglesea Street Garda Station. A Family Liaison Officer has also been assigned to support the Gallagher family during this difficult time.
