WORCESTER, MA — The Worcester State University community is grieving the loss of men’s ice hockey student-athlete Evan Armit, who passed away on August 24, 2025, at the age of 23 following a courageous battle with metastatic melanoma.
Evan’s death has left a profound impact on teammates, classmates, coaches, and friends who knew him for his dedication, humility, and infectious spirit.
“Evan was an incredible student-athlete and beloved teammate. He will be greatly missed by our entire campus community,” said Athletic Director Michael Mudd. “Our thoughts are with the Armit family at this difficult time.”
A vital member of the Lancers Men’s Ice Hockey program for the past two years, Evan balanced his pursuit of a Business Administration degree with the rigorous demands of collegiate athletics. His passion for hockey extended beyond Worcester State, having previously played with the Winnipeg Freeze (MJHL) and the Islanders Hockey Club (USPHL). Coaches and teammates often praised his work ethic and unwavering commitment on and off the ice.
“Evan embodied the very best qualities of a teammate and a friend—hardworking, humble, and selfless,” said Head Coach Jay Punsky. “He carried himself with quiet strength, treated everyone with kindness, and never lost sight of the importance of family and friendship. His spirit leaves a lasting impression.”
Beyond his athletic achievements, Evan was admired for his generosity, leadership, and resilience. Even in the final months of his life, he faced his diagnosis with courage and used his experience to raise awareness about melanoma, inspiring others to cherish life’s moments.
The Worcester State community, along with the broader hockey family, continues to rally around Evan’s loved ones. His legacy of heart, humility, and purpose will be remembered by all who were fortunate to know him.
