The tight-knit community of Zebulon, North Carolina, is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Kevin Nkulu Mutaba, 22, who died in a devastating single-vehicle crash early Wednesday morning along U.S. 64 West near Lizard Lick Road.
According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCSHP), the fatal crash occurred around 3 a.m. at mile marker 432 on U.S. 64/Interstate 87 West. Troopers and emergency crews responding to the scene discovered a vehicle fully engulfed in flames after it had collided with a tree along the roadside.
Investigators believe the vehicle had been traveling at a high rate of speed before veering off the right side of the highway, striking the tree and bursting into flames on impact. Despite immediate emergency response, Mutaba was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities confirmed he was the sole occupant of the car, and no other vehicles were involved.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation temporarily issued an alert warning motorists to avoid the area as crews worked to extinguish the fire and clear the wreckage.
As the NCSHP continues to investigate what led to the crash, friends and loved ones are remembering Kevin as a kind-hearted young man whose life ended far too soon. Messages of support and condolences have poured in online, offering prayers and comfort to the Mutaba family during this difficult time.
